Spring is in the Air!

If you're like me, you can't wait for Spring to arrive! As I write this, Spring is in the air here in southwestern Pennsylvania. A few "teaser" days of warmer temps and sunshine promise that the end to Winter is near. I am NOT a Winter person by any stretch of the imagination! For one thing, I hate being cold. For another thing, I hate how it gets dark so early. I'm a firm believer that humans were meant to hibernate in the Winter!

But Spring, now that's a different story! Spring is the time for shedding layers and shaking off sluggishness, both literal and figurative. Renewal, rebirth, reawakening, growth - that's what Spring means to me. I'm looking forward to the time change next weekend and longer daylight hours. I'm impatient to open the windows and let in fresh air, to enjoy the beauty of flowers and trees in bloom, and to celebrate Easter and special family events like my grandson's third birthday and my youngest son's senior prom.

From a coaching perspective, Spring projects and plans lend themselves exceptionally well to step-by-step strategies. Considered in their entirety, popular Spring endeavors such as thoroughly cleaning one's home, being more active, and traveling can seem overwhelming. But breaking down "to do" list or "bucket" list goals into short-term tasks can make these endeavors seem much more doable and a lot less stressful. In fact, studies have shown that the ability to shift one's focus between short-term tasks and long-term goals helps to increase positive emotions and sustain motivation.

Getting started on your project may require a greater focus on what you hope to accomplish rather than the steps it will take to get you there. Along the way, it may be better to focus on the success you've had with individual steps. And as you get closer to the end, shifting your focus back to your goal can help you reach the finish line. A coach can help you navigate this process, from identifying the scope of your project to determining a timeline, mustering resources, and buoying motivation when the going seems tough. Before you know it, you'll be enjoying a cleaner home, healthier body, and memories from that trip to see the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C.!
